You know you have made it as a blogger when you get an email that you will be interviewing Chris Evans about his new Marvel Movie – Captain America Civil War. The best part is that I got to do it with my blogger friends! I am a HUGE Marvel fan. I’ve seen everything from Agent Carter to Thor and everything in between. Have you seen Dare Devil? I am in LOVE!! Since Disney started making the Marvel movies and TV shows, I’ve enjoyed everything and cannot get enough! More PLEASE!!
Captain America is one of my favorite characters. He personifies good in my mind. Right and wrong comes easy to him giving me a nice warm feeling about the world. When given the choice between #TeampCap and #TeamIronMan, I like to think that I was the first fan to raise their virtual hand. I had to be on #TeamCap to support Captain America. duh!! I swear it had nothing to with the fact that I love the shield and how hot Chris Evans looks in his uniform!! I swear!! I cannot wait to talk to you about the movie, but I have been sworn to secrecy for another week or so! My husband has sworn me to secrecy until we watch it in theaters together. We are waiting impatiently for it to come to theaters on May 6. You will get a sneak peek before that!!
All the photos in this post from the interview are from the lovely and talented
LOVEBUGS AND POSTCARDS!! Thanks for being awesome!!
Needless to say, being the Marvel fan that I am, I was geeking out for weeks before the #CaptainAmericaEvent trip. The geeking out jumped to the next level when Chris Evans walked in to be interviewed. You don’t realize the extent of your Fan Girl crush until he walks into the room!! Chris walked in on Paul Bethany’s (Vision) interview waving his phone and questioning Paul about his photos in Buzz Feed. He wanted to know how Paul could like this good on such short notice? So suave and so handsome? The jokes leading up to the interview set the tone for a fun filled interview session. Truly unforgettable!! You guys are in for a treat!!
Obviously, it looks like there’s a lot of fun on set. Do you guys play pranks?
“Certain movies I’ve done, you know, comedies where everyone is a little more loose. On these movies, there are people who are there to work, and so you don’t want to diminish their experience or disrespect their process. For the most part on set, you’re not, not tame, but we still have fun. Days when it’s just Paul and me, we’re giggling a lot more. There are certain actors who are austere in their approach, and you want to respect that. Off set is where the real disaster happens.”
When you put the uniform back on and the costume back on, how do you feel?
“I feel good now; I didn’t in the beginning. In the beginning, it was terrifying. Don’t all our brains just manage to go to the most negative thing possible, whenever there’s something in front of us, you just focus on what the worst possible outcome could be? When I began the movie, it was just like all the things that could go wrong and how this could be a mistake. Over the course of five or six movies now, it feels great. It really does. The Russo Brothers and Marvel and everyone has made it such a wonderful environment. They’ve proven themselves time and time again to be great filmmakers. Now, it’s a point of pride. When you see the suit, you’re excited to get the suit on, and you’re very honored and humbled that you get to have a connection to it. It is bigger than you. Captain America will live on. There will be other Captain Americas. It will live on, a lot longer than I will. It’s just nice to have a little place in its lineage.”
This [Captain America Movie] is a little darker than the others have been, so how does that feel to transition into a darker role?
“It was nice. You know, because I think for the most part with, with Cap, he’s always- the trickiest thing about the character is that he’s just a selfless guy, he’s not one of these brooding characters where you can kind of as an audience member connect to his conflict and struggle. He’s all- he’s very selfless, you know, and I think to some degree it can feel vanilla. it can feel boring. You know, his, his goal has always been doing what other people need. In this movie, it’s the first time he did what he wants, and that’s a little bit of a departure for him. It’s nice because it’s motivated by family. Cap doesn’t have [a family]. He woke up seventy years later, and everyone he knows is dead.
“You have Bucky, this one guy, this one person who is the remaining chapter of his life before. You’re pitting his current family with his old family. You can’t ask any man to choose. It’s like taking the friends you went to high school with compared to the friends you met in college. There are two worlds you try and somehow find a way to blend. For Cap, Bucky is his only remaining thing. It’s the first time he’s said I’m choosing me over you. It’s tough for him, but I like that. It gives him a little bit of conflict because he can be a little boring.”
What was the hardest scene to shoot? The flexing scene with the helicopter?
“My arm to this day is not the same.” Since it was a fake, helicopter, it was not a big deal in the beginning. But they were having trouble getting the shot that they want, so they decided to make it more difficult for real. “Let’s drift the helicopter. It’s on a rig so that you can move it. Then they did move it, and it actually required you to hold on.” “I did something [to my arm]. Chris joked that he doesn’t expect sympathy from us, but went on to say that, “I really did, bang something up.” “It was a trick scene, but those are they are good scenes.”
Robert Downey Jr. & Chris Evans Scenes
After talking about getting banged up in the helicopter scene. Chris went on to talk about the acting scenes like the ones with him and Robert Downey Jr.
“It’s harder doing scenes with Downey because he’s such a force. He’s so good, and he owns the oxygen. He comes in the room, and he’s powerful. The spine of the film is that conflict. Those scenes are the…framework for the conflict. If you don’t invest in those moments, the conflict is going to be sour and fall flat.”
To me, the scenes with Robert Downey Jr. & Chris Evans make this movie so great! I totally get where Chris is coming from here. If you miss the target, and you don’t get the emotion on screen, then you could lose the audience. I’ve seen it happen, where a great story and great actors come together into a crappy movie. It comes down to missing that feeling moment. You would think it takes a lot of time to build emotion, but it really about good acting, editing and even the music. As moviegoers, we are looking to feel something. The action is incredible, but the story keeps you coming back for more!
Chris Evans tells us more about the scenes with Robery Downey Jr.
The few scenes that we have where it’s just him, and it was intimidating. You want to match him. He’s scary because he’s so good. He’s just good at anything he does. He changes things on the fly so you just want to try to keep up sparring wise, that you can hang with him. Those scenes were the most terrifying. Terrifying, I’ll say terrifying.”
What were your thoughts when Marvel threatened to boycott Georgia if they passed the Anti-Gay bill?
“It was great. My younger brother is gay, and he was the one sending me these text messages being like “good for Disney.” It was just a nice thing to read about. Disney spends huge money in Georgia. I’m proud of them. I was so proud of Disney for standing up to that. Making a statement and saying listen, this is what we feel; this is what we believe in. It’s a hate bill that they were trying to pass. I really glad it happened [and] I was glad it worked out. There are still some states that are messing up. I was proud to be a part of the Disney family during that.”
As Captain America, you are my son’s favorite superhero. Growing up who was your favorite superhero?
OMG, this is a precious piece of the Chris Evans interview! He grew up playing with My Little Ponies and Care Bears!! As a child of the 80s (I’m the same age as Chris), these were my jam!! I discovered Marvel and the “boy” stuff later in life!!
“I didn’t have one. I had an older sister. Anyone who has siblings [can understand]. That’s why, when I have kids, I’d love for my oldest child to be a girl. I think it softens up the boy. We just [did] whatever Carly wanted to do. My Little Pony and Care Bear that was it. Just being in Carly’s room was a big deal. You’re like don’t mess it up!! Whatever she gives us to play with, that’s what we’re playing with. It was My Little Ponies, Cabbage Patch, Care Bears. I didn’t have a brother being like [play] with GI Joe.”
“Comic books were not on my radar. I liked Star Wars, which was maybe the coolest thing about me. That was my dad being like please like Han Solo and I was, but Tender Heart Bear. It’s not untrue. It’s really sad.”
I don’t think it is sad at all, and obviously, Chris thinks it was a great way to grow up. Chris seems like he is going to be a great dad and he is a stellar person. My husband and I try to let our daughter play with everything from traditionally “boy” stuff like trains and swords and Princess dolls. She likes to play with her dolls, but she also loved Star Wars.
My interview with Chris Evans was up there with one of the best days ever! Being in this room with him, laughing at his charming and REAL personality was epic! This is something that I will remember for the rest of my life!! I would totally hang out with him, and it just makes me want to see more movies with him as the star!
