How to Get More Wear Out of Your Dresses
Are you constantly buying dresses? I get it! They are easier to purchase because you do not have to think about matching top to bottom!
First, put on your favorite dresses that your friends have seen you in a million times because…Hello…they are your favorite! You can get more use of the dresses by using them as skirts. I started with my Karina Dress because I have been wearing it non-stop lately. They are so easy to wear!
Second, grab a cropped top or a DIY cropped top like the one I made from Target. Here are the DIY directions. I chose a Merona Favorite V-Neck Tee from Target to use as my cropped top for the dress to skirt DIY. If you have a large chest or have an hourglass figure, then v-neck is for you. If you have a smaller chest or look great in crew necks, then by all means, use a crew neck top. Either way, the top should be fitted to the body. Stay in a dark family so that you cannot see the top of the dress though your top.
Next, use a wide belt to cinch your waist and cover up the seam in between the “skirt” and top. This makes it look like you are tucking a top into a skirt rather than putting a top over a dress. I used a stretchy belt with a faux leather front for extra comfort.
Finish off with a little bit of jewelry and heels! 🙂
This Dress to Skirt DIY makes it easy to bring your dresses into the fall as you can throw a long sleeve button down, turtle neck, or long sleeve shirt over your dresses.
Have you worn dresses as skirts before? How excited are you to try to turn your dresses into skirts?
I don’t wear that many dresses, but I love all of your suggestions 🙂
This is brilliant! I’ve tried it before with a regular tee, but you’re so right that the extra fabric gathers. Now I just need the cutting supplies and a belt!
Ok that is so awesome! I need to make a crop top like that to give a great variety of looks for all my dresses! I love that cute look! You are totally rockin’ it!
Thanks Jade! Glad to help.
I can’t handle you- SO PERFECT! I love this idea, and paired with your crop top, which is made easily enough, I can take my summer clothes and turn them into Fall skirts with darker tops for Fall! Love love love!
This is a fantastic idea! You look amazing all the time!!!! 😀
This is a fantastic idea! You look amazing all the time!!!! 😀
Oh wow, so cute! What a clever idea to get multiple looks from one dress.
What a great idea. That’s such a smart idea in order to get many uses from one dress! Love your outfit!
This is so clever. I have a bunch of dresses that I wear all the time, and it would be great to mix them up a bit just by adding a top and belt.
Okay, that is just genius… I love this idea… I have never thought of doing it and it is a great way to change the look up, just a bit. Thanks for the post
What a great idea! That is such a great way to make a “new” outfit out of something you already have.
Well I guess my daughter was right and I was wrong! She’s been putting shirts over dresses and I told her it was weird, but then I KNOW I have no concept of fashion. You make it look so simple and it looks like you really bought the dress like that! Maybe they should start selling tops and belts like that WITH dresses so people can get two looks out of one purchase.
That is too cute! What a great way to stretch your wardrobe without making one stitch!
I love this idea! Extending your wardrobe without spending a fortune is always a good thing in my book.
What a great idea, and it really does make the entire look much better. I love the black top, much better than all-over pattern! Great job!
This is a good idea! I need to start being more crafty with my clothes like this.

What a cute idea and a great way to save money too! 2 outfits for the price of one!
You’ve got my wheels turning now! I’m ready to raid my closet!
What a SMART idea! That black crop top “dress” looks awesome on you!

Hi, I Hope you are Having a Great Day Today! I Really Love this Idea of Turning Dresses into Skirts; I am Always Turning One Piece of Clothing into Something Else! I Don’t Believe in Throwing Something Out if You Really Like the Fabric or the Print, even if it Means Just Making a Scarf Out of it! I Am Not Working Right Now Since I Had a Bad Motorcycle Accident So I Do Not Have the Money to Buy a Ton of Clothes & I Had to Find Ways to be Thrifty! One Problem I Have is that I am Tall & Curvy So Dresses on Me Tend to be a lot Shorter than they are on Some, So I Just Turn them into a Shirts by Wearing them with Tights & a Wide Belt! I Do Not Wear Shorts b/c I am Extremely Fair Skinned & is it Just Me or are They Literally Getting Shorter & Shorter Each Year? Nobody Wants to See that Much of Me and My White Legs & Cellulite! Thanks for this Very Insightful & Helpful Post; I Would Love to See More Posts Like This in the Future! Thank You & Have a Blessed Day! Jana
