VSP Open Enrollment: Importance of Annual Eye Exams
You may have noticed that I wear a lot of glasses. I don’t wear them just because they are fashionable. I wear because I am pretty much legal blind without them. I have been wearing glasses since second grade and contact since sixth grade. Over the years, my vision got worse and worse until finally it leveled off during law school. It was also out of wack during pregnancy. This apparently is a side effect that no one tells you about it until you Google it after a few weeks of not being able to read street signs.
I do not recall getting my eyes check before I was second grade, but that does not mean it did not happen. My mom brought me to the doctor at the slightest sniffle so I am pretty sure I went early and often. However, I remember that my vision problem was discovered by my teacher when I could not read the black board. I give a ton of credit to my teacher for discovering my vision problem. Teachers are amazing, but I do not want to rely on a teacher to discover a vision problem as it can mistaken for a behavioral issue or the child just falls behind because she cannot follow the lecture. That is why it is extremely important to have annual eye exams for your children and yourself.
I realize that eye exams is not something you think about if you have perfect vision. Both my parents have perfect vision and are just now starting to wear reading glasses. However, my sister and I both wear glasses. Because I have always had vision insurance, there was never a financial impact on my parents. We have been getting our moneys worth out of the insurance for years!
