Family Bonding Over Some Jackson Pollock

The family that can make a mess together stays together. Having fun with your significant other is key to lasting relationships. In an effort to test my theory on relationships, I decided to ask my fiance to get involved with a little home DIY.  I am huge fan of Jackson Pollock ever since I saw one his paintings in person 15 years ago.  The splatters spoke to me in an very unexpected way. The chaos of the splatters made sense to me and the beauty was overwhelming.

Ingredients

1. Family Member(s)

2. Canvas

3. Paint Brushes (1 for every color)

4. Drop Clothes (or large trash bags)

5. Paint (at least 7 different colors)

6. Paint Clothes (Clothing that can be Ruined)

Step 1

Get your family (for me it was my hubby, Kevin) involved by bringing them shopping.  Go thrift store shopping together for canvases with the space you want to fill in mind.

I saw few large canvas at Goodwill a few days before I mentioned the project to Kevin.  Once I told Kevin about it, we went to Goodwill to determine if the canvas would be large enough for our wall.  The canvas was about 4 feet by 3 feet so we bought it from GW for the unbelievable price of $25 bucks!

Step 2

Get some cheap paint.  Lowe’s always has a mistake paint section filled with paint ranging from $1-$10. I am sure Home Depot and other paint stores have the same thing.  Obviously, you want to incorporate some of the colors from your room into the pallet so you might have to buy some full price paint.  Only buy the small cans of the expensive paint.

Step 3

Lay out the drop cloths on an outdoor patio or on grass. Cover everything that your don’t want paint on. Give yourself at least a 3 feet around the canvas in every direction.

Step 4

Open the cans and start splattering with the paint brushes. You are done when you decide that “It’s ART!”

HAVE FUN and GET MESSY!

After the masterpiece is hung, you have a daily reminder of how much fun you had.

  1. I have a huge canvas done by my 5 year old in my parlour. It was a yard sale freebie find that had a big hideous picture of an owl on it (the guy was thrilled to be rid of it). The can of matte white paint I used to prep it was a small fraction of the cost of buying a huge canvas like that.

  2. I love it! I have a bunch of paint that I can’t seem to get rid of, now I know what to do! Thanks again for the inspiration!

  3. The end result is beautiful. I may have to try this with my kids… but with them, I may have to buy the large cans of paint instead of the small… I’m sure 99% of it will end up on them instead of the canvas. 😉
