Let me preface this suggestion. If you haven’t seen The Shining, do not like The Shining or are otherwise terrified of The Shining, do not watch Room 237. However if you are interested in the subtext of that Kubrick masterpiece, than watch away!

Room-237

A Documentary for “The Shining” Fans

Room 237 is a documentary featuring a variety of theories about possible sub-textual elements to Stanley Kubrick’s version of The Shining. The film is done entirely in voice over featuring b-roll of The Shining and several of Stanley Kubrick’s other movies including Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut. The theories included in the movie are: evidence that Stanley Kubrick faked the moon landing; the labyrinth being related to the story of the Minotaur; two different theories about genocide (Native American and Jewish). Additionally the film discusses some of the interesting parallels made when the end and beginning of the film are played overlaid on top of each other, simultaneously.

I personally do not take much stock in most of these theories, however that does not make them any less interesting to listen to. The ones with the deepest connection seem to be built around the theme of Native American genocide.

If you are interested in chewing the gristle of The Shining then you should definitely take some time to check this out. Remember to take it with a grain of salt!
