Welcome to Miami: Kick back in Florida’s art deco playground

Whatever your preconception of Florida’s quirky capital, it’s a place that never fails to surprise visitors to the city. From the pastel, Art Deco buildings that stand testament to a bygone age, to its endless strip malls, painfully beautiful residents and startling white sands, Miami is a fascinating destination for the out-of-towner. So what are the best ways to while away the hours in a place where leisure is almost always order of the day?

Go wild at the zoo

Jungle Island Miami is one of the city’s longest established zoological parks, and the perfect place to spend a day burning through energy with hyperactive kids. While there are animals, ranging from cute pygmy goats to an exotic white tiger, this isn’t all that will hold your attention. There are also daily shows, including a demonstration of the zoo’s famously intelligent parrots, and talks on fascinating species from organutans to penguins. Save money by booking your tickets online.

Shop til you drop

Miami sprawls endless boulevards of designer boutiques, most famously in its South Beach district, Make for Lincoln Road, where familiar fashion brands sidle alongside more decadent boutiques. Fashionistas on a budget can at least gaze longingly into the windows of the higher end hotspots without looking entirely desperate, and the people-watching alone makes it an entertaining venture.

Venture back in time to Vizcaya

This early 20th century villa may have been built 100 years ago, but it continues to enchant aesthetes with its impressive collection of artwork, housed in a fairytale Mediterranean-style setting and surrounded by gardens worthy of a Renaissance Palace. From the collection of orchids to the Rococo furniture, prepare to spend a day in awe of this historic wonderland.

Chill out in the Sunset Lounge

The best place to soak up the setting rays of a blood orange Floribbean sundown, Sunset Lounge also happens to be one of the coolest hangouts in the city. Sample a cocktail if you can choose from the formidable menu; but whether you choose the Hemingway Daiquiri or a classic Manhattan, be prepared for a heady experience.
