Happy holidays! Some feel that giving a gift card may seem a little impersonal. Why not add a little personal touch by making your own gift card holder that doubles as an ornament? These are so simple and fun to make!
How to Give a Gift Card as a Gift
Giving a gift card really is a thoughtful gift. You are giving them money, but also saying “I know where you love to eat or shop, and I want to give you the freedom to buy exactly what you want.”
But just putting a gift card in a Christmas card might be a little less thoughtful.
This is why making a homemade gift card holder is such a wonderful idea. It shows that not only did you take the effort to learn their favorite store, but you also made them a craft too. It’s beautiful and the time spent making it comes through in the gift.

– Needle and thick white thread

– Velcro

How to Make a Santa Gift Card Holder Step-By-Step
Step 1:
For the Santa ornament, I chose a red sparkly felt sheet. Hold the sheet horizontally and cut a strip 3 inches wide.
Step 2:
Measure one inch down from the top and fold down for the top flap and tuck in the bottom under the top flap. In the picture below you can see the dotted lines where it needs to be folded.
Step 3:
Cut the sides of the top flap so that it forms a “V”. Glue a white strip down the middle of the top flap and the bottom flap and add three black pom-poms. Next, sew the sides to create a little pocket for the gift card to go in.
Step 4:
Stick the Velcro underneath the top flap to ensure the gift card stays in place.
How to Make a Christmas Tree Gift Card Holder/Ornament Step-By-Step
Step 1:
For the Christmas tree I decided to use a sparkly green felt sheet. Place the sheet horizontally and cut a 3.5 inch wide strip.
Step 2:
Fold the felt in half and cut the sides of the felt as shown in the picture below. Make sure it’s wide enough to fit a gift card!
Step 3:
You can decorate the tree with whatever decorations you want. I wanted to keep it simple so I used leftover pieces of felt and a mini Pom-Pom for the top.
Step 4:
As with the Santa ornament sew the sides of the tree. Be careful not to sew all the way to the top. You need to leave an opening for the gift card. Stick on the Velcro at the very top of the inside portion.
Step 5:
I used the same thread to make a little loop at the top of each gift card holder/ornament.
Step 6:
Insert your gift cards and hang on your tree until you are ready to pass out to friends and family! Merry Christmas!
There you go. That is everything you need to know to make 2 super cute gift card holders that can also double as tree ornaments.
How to Decide Which Gift Card to Give
Stuck on which gift card to get someone? This part can be tough, especially if you don’t know that person very well. Here is how to hack your way into buying them the perfect gift card.
Social Media Spy
Snoop through their most recent social media posts. As soon as you see a post of a place they ate at, or a shot of their favorite coffee shop, write it down. People give a lot of clues about their likes and dislikes on social media.
Use A Go-Between
If you don’t want to blow your cover, ask a friend or family member to ask that person some questions about their favorite places to shop. You could even enlist the help of your kids too.
Straight Up Ask
There is no shame in just asking them what their favorite restaurant is. It’s much better to ask and give them a gift they will love, than to guess and get it wrong.
