A few weeks ago, I intereview several of the cast members of the new Captain America Civil War movie. One of the interviews was with Emily VanCamp who plays Agent 13 – the daughter of one of my favorite Marvel Character’s Agent Peggy Carter. I dressed up like Agent Cater for D23 last year (check out the Agent Cater Costume). Agent 13 was in Winter Soldier for a bit, but she has greater role in this new Captain America Movie.

Can you tell us about your training?

It’s just a lot of working out. I had already done some training for Revenge, so it was like an easier segue into the films but, you want to go into these movies feeling really strong and feeling fit, and I want to be able to keep up. We were wrapping Revenge while I started training for the movie which is very interesting and realized how much I should have done that for Revenge. I was fit doing Revenge, but this is another level. I’m just not good going into it and, it’s fun. I love that stuff. I was a dancer, so all that physical activity’s great and helps with the sequences and stuff because ultimately it’s choreography. I hope to get to do more of it.

emily vancamp-1368Was there any scene that was particularly challenging for you?

I wouldn’t say difficult. I think in these movies you just don’t want to screw it up. Like everyone’s bringing their “A” game. It’s very rare that you go into a movie almost already knowing it’s going to be great and successful because of just historically they’ve been so successful. You want to bring your “A” game, and you want to show up. I was in Winter’s Soldier, but not very much. It’s always a little intimidating. There’s that nervous factor before you go into it but everyone’s so kind and generous, and the Russo Brothers have always made me feel comfortable. I wouldn’t say difficult; I just want to do the best job you can.

How do you feel knowing you’re going to down in history as Agent 13?

It’s really cool. I mean being a part of this universe is a special thing especially with the movies that they’re making and how good they are. It’s cool, and I’m really happy to do it with the people I’m doing it with. As I said, everyone’s great and super talented. These movies could have been very surface level, but what I love about Marvel is how they delve into the characters. They give us the freedom as well to create a version of the character that the fans will like, and it’s a fun process. The fact that people love the movies is an extra bonus.

emily vancamp-1371What of you went into the character?

What I love about Sharon is her moral compass. She has a strong moral compass, and that’s what she and Steven initially identify with each other and ultimately in the comic books it led to a very complicated relationship. [The thing that] brings them together as well is their love of Peggy. There’s an initial trust there that maybe he doesn’t have with anyone else and she doesn’t have with anyone else. You see her struggle with that within this film because she’s battling her work and her loyalty to her work. Is she gonna follow her head and her heart? People can relate to that struggle.

Emily was obsessed with Ninja Turtles as a kid. “I was obsessed with the Ninja Turtles; I’m not gonna lie. I was one four years in a row for Halloween. I was trying to figure out do they count as superheroes. I wanted to be the Ninja Turtle [not April]. I was like Donatello one year and then like Michelangelo three years because I love pizza.

emily vancamp-1375How does it feel to have a pop figure?

I was just noticing this. I never actually saw it out of the box. It’s hilarious. I think she’s pretty cool. I mean that’s awesome. I have to get one for my mom or something. That’s really cool.

Will the red hat become a trademark feature for your character in future films?

No, I don’t think so. That’s not her thing. She can’t steal it.
