Summer is officially upon us and it is getting hotter by the day. I am very excited to bring out my umbrella and sit by the pool on my new patio furniture with my friends and family for playdates and summer get-togethers. This yummy Raw Honey Cosmopolitan Cocktail is the perfect cocktail to serve for these gatherings. I love making a cosmopolitan martini with Nature Nate’s 100% Pure, Raw & Unfiltered Honey for my friends and family guests. They have been a huge hit so far!

The best part of these cosmo cocktails is that they are sweetened with honey rather than sugar. Honey is a smarter alternative to processed sugars and helps me feel better about drinking a cosmo cocktail by the pool in my bathing suit. I have been doing my best to hold to a Paleo Diet and that means no processed sugar. Since I started using honey instead of sugar, I have less sugar crashes in the middle of the day.

Nature Nate’s Raw Unfiltered Honey

Did you know that honey is sweeter than processed sugar, which means you can use less honey than you would sugar to get the same desired level of sweetness! I have been on the hunt for something that is better than sugar and discovered that raw honey is the best choice for me and my family. I have been using honey as an alternative to sugar lately with really crowd-pleasing results. My family keeps asking my secret ingredient and I get to boast that it is raw honey!

Unlike processed sugar, raw honey contains several B vitamins, as well as A, D, E, K vitamins, and antioxidants. Skipping processed sugar is something that I have been focusing on a lot lately.  Honey is an awesome alternative because of all the nutrients you get with it. When making food and drink choices for me and my family, I love when we can get nutrients in everything we consume. I hate to drink or eat empty calories with no benefit to the body.

Processed sugar is a high glycemic index food, which means experiencing a sugar high and then crash. Raw honey is a low glycemic index alternative without the crash. Raw honey has a higher water content than processed sugar, which means gram for gram raw honey contains less sugar than processed sugar. Since I started using honey instead of sugar, I have noticed that I don’t crash midday anymore.

Nature Nate’s honey is 100% pure, raw, unfiltered honey – meaning no fillers, corn syrup, or additives. I think it is awesome that their honey undergoes in-house and external testing to ensure that the bees have not been around commonly used pesticides, herbicides or antibiotics. It’s just raw honey, nothing extra! You can read more here.  I have been reading labels like crazy lately and have been finding that there are so many products that contain sugar and corn syrup. I have been doing my best to avoid anything with added sugar and corn syrup for me and my family. When my friends come over for summer get-togethers, they really appreciate that I am taking extra care when preparing food and drinks for the party.

History of the Cosmopolitan Cocktail

The Cosmopolitan is one of those classic vodka cocktails with tons of somewhat recent history behind it. I learned about it by watching Sex and the City. Even though I was dying to drink it, I did not have the grace to hold a martini glass and a clutch purse. To me, fashion was the winner over drinks.

The pink-hued martini only started becoming part of my drink choice since martini glasses got shorter stems and therefore are easier to hold. My priorities in my youth were to protect my outfit from mishaps with pink drinks. Now, I choose better glasses, better ingredients, and care more about having fun in those clothes! The best ingredient swap that I have found is swapping the sugar in the cosmo for honey.

The original Cosmopolitan was said to be created by South Beach bartender, Cheryl Cook in the 1970s, but was not “officially” created until it was made by Toby Cecchini his tenure at NYC’s Odeon in the 1980s. This was the hot spot in the 1980s in New York. Eventually, celebrities were seen drinking the cosmo, but it did not reach the masses until Carrie Bradshaw drank it on Sex and the City. It is amazing how a TV show can impact societal choices.  Read more about the history here.
