Treadmill Desks – Do They Work & How Do You Create One

Sharing is caring!

If you work at home like me, you’ve probably toyed with the idea of getting a readmill desk. Wouldn’t it be GREAT to just work out all day while you are busy on client calls or replying to emails? Sitting is rumored to be slowly harming our bodies, and we need to get more active. Since our schedules are packed with meetings, children’s activities, and events, it can be hard to pencil in a run at the gym. Here is the full scoop on treadmill desks and how they can help you, and I share a simple way to make your own.

Everything You Need to Know About Treadmill Desks

Treadmill Desks: How to Get Started

  1. If you invest in a treadmill desk on Amazon (I personally love this treadmill desk, but the price is a bit steep), remember to dress for exercise! Even though you may be working, jeans or a skirt may feel uncomfortable as you walk. The right attire will keep you motivated and walking.
  2. Don’t rush into it. Start slow! You may want to spend your entire workday walking on the treadmill, but if you are not used to that level of activity your body will be sore. Set yourself up for success and work up to longer spurts of walking.
  3. Read up on what to expect when you start off with a treadmill desk. This book, Treadmill Desk Revolution: The Easy Way to Lose Up to 50 Pounds in a Year – Without Dieting, has powerful insight on reaching your goals.

Treadmill Desks: The Investment

These treadmill desks (this is the one I have) may be more than you are willing to spend, but you can also make your own. Look for a used treadmill at a yard sale or on Craig’s List. You can then create your own with a wood shelf (long enough to stretch across your treadmill through the arm rests), screws, a bungee cord, and a drill.

When you drill in two screw eyes on each side of the wood shelf, you can use the bungee cord to secure it to the treadmill arms. With a little trial and error, you can get it to fit tightly.

If you don’t want to DIY it, you can try this Treadmill Desk: Laptop and iPad Holder. It offers portability but the stability that an all in one device offers.

Treadmill Desk Alternatives

If you would prefer to pedal, you can slide this DeskCycle Desk Exercise Bike Pedal Exerciser underneath your desk. It is small so it won’t take up a lot of room.

If you do have the space for exercise equipment but don’t want to invest in a treadmill, this FitDesk 2.0 Desk Exercise Bike with Massage Bar may be what you are looking for. Instead of walking, you can pedal through meetings.

Working doesn’t have to be boring. Spice up your work week with a renewed purpose toward fitness. You will feel more energetic if you start to walk on a treadmill while you take calls, and you will see an improvement in your overall wellness over time. Consider the investment of a treadmill desk or try to DIY your own. You can make a positive health change each and every day. You just have to start!
