Complexions Contemporary Ballet by Maria Serritella
Maria Serritella is a great friend of mine. She is a fashionista, actor, dancer, makeup artist, and mother that will be contributing to April Golightly. Check out and like her IMDB page and her makeup skills in this tutorial.
This month I had the very fortunate circumstance of attending and viewing the performance of one of the most talented dance companies in the world today, Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Led by acclaimed artistic directors and founders Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, this multicultural company has been reinventing dance since its inception in 1984. Over the last 20 years, they worked hard and smart to find themselves having travelled the world over showcasing their genius choreographers and virtuoso dancers. It has been their vision of expressing non-restrictive movement in relation to our ever-evolving, more culturally interconnected society that has catapulted them to the top of the dance entertainment scene.
Complexions Contemporary Ballet is making dance history. With exceptional choreography that is technical, strong, intelligent, beautiful, and entertaining, set on multicultural dancers who perform these amazing works cleanly, with great strength, flexibility, stamina, and passion, it is no wonder they are becoming a tremendous force. Their philosophy is best described by them as noted on their website: “The company’s foremost innovation is that dance should be about removing boundaries, not reinforcing them. Whether it be the limiting traditions of a single style, period, venue, or culture, Complexions transcends them all, creating an open, continually evolving form of dance that reflects the movement of our world—and all its constituent cultures—as an interrelated whole”.
After the performance, I was simply left in awe. I felt like an excited kid in a candy store, drooling over the array of deliciously colorful movement coupled with engaging music that just knocked my brain cells off their feet!…lol. And, of course, after indulging, was left longing for more 😀
Lastly, to top off the evening with the sweetest finish, I was introduced to and met (thanks to my AH-MAZING significant other) the geniuses behind the works, Artistic Director, Co. Founder, and Resident Choreographer Dwight Rhoden and, Associate Artistic Director, Ballet Master, Choreographer, Photographer, & Costume Designer Jae Man Joo :))
“their creative vision restricted by nothing but the limits of the human body itself.” Complexions Contemporary Ballet
