The Ultimate Cake for Oreo Fans

Do you love Oreos? Like, really love them?

I adore them probably more than I should. This cake celebrates my favorite flavor of all time – mint Oreos.

It is made entirely from scratch. It has the perfect texture – fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth, and avoids that crumby/dry feeling most cakes get.

And there are mint Oreos not only in the cake, but in the frosting and on top of the cake too.

Keep in mind, this is not one of those easy recipes. It is a labor of love. But after you finish it, you will have a masterpiece that you’ll be proud to show off!

The entire recipe is on a printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. Scroll on down if you want. Or, read through some of my baking tips and see some in-process photos that will help you along.

How to Make Mint Oreo Cake From Scratch

You will love making this cake – especially since it comes out looking so decadent and stunning! Here are some step by step pictures and tips that will help you along the way.

There are 4 main sections to making this stunning cake – baking the cake, preparing the cake, making the icing, and decorating the cake.

1.) Bake the Cake

The first step is to make the cake. Making the cake involves quite a few steps.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Spray all 3 cake pan with Pam baking spray and set aside.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the milk and vanilla and set aside
  4. Using a standing mixer, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy
  5. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder
  6. Alternating between the milk and dry ingredients, gradually pour into the butter mixture. Mixing on low to medium speed until combined
  7. Using another large mixing bowl and a hand mixer, beat the eggs until stiff peaks form
  8. Fold into the cake batter
  9. Divide the batter between three bowls
  10. Mix in a few drops of kelly green food coloring into one bowl
  11. Mix in a few drops of leaf green food coloring into the second bowl
  12. Mix in a few drops of mint green food coloring into the third bowl – You should have three different shades of green
  13. Pour the batter’s into the cake pans
  14. Bake in the oven for 23-26 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean in the center

2.) Prepare the Cake Layers

After you let the cakes cool, you can begin preparing them for the layering and decorating that you’ll do.

Using a cake slicer, remove the domes from the cakes and place them on the cake board.

3.) Make the Frosting

Put the cakes aside and make your frosting next. The recipe for the frosting is in the recipe card at the bottom of the post. Pin this post so you can find it later – you’ll want to use this frosting on other things you bake.

The main thing to remember is that you’ll need to split the frosting into 3 bowls for the different colors – leaf green, mint green, and white.

4.) Frost and Decorate the Cake

For this part, you’ll appreciate the pictures. It’s the most involved part, but also the most rewarding.

Scoop about 1 Cup of the mint Oreo frosting onto the darker green cake layer.

Flatten the icing into a layer of icing.

Sprinkle 1/2 Cup of the crushed Oreos onto the top of the frosting

Place the second lighter green cake layer on top

Repeat steps with the frosting and another cup of crushed Oreos

Place the last layer of cake on top.

Frost the entire cake – all three layers – with the vanilla frosting. This will be your crumb layer. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

Place a 9 inch round cake board onto the top of the cake. Pipe the frosting around the cake in layers, going from darkest green to white on top.

Smooth the frosting with an angled spatula. Then, the following step will be decorating the top of the cake.

Prepare the chocolate ganache on your stove. Carefully pour it on the cake using a squeeze bottle, letting it drip, but only barely. This takes a lot of care and patience.

Allow the ganache to harden. Once it sets completely, you can decorate the top to your liking. I piped vanilla frosting, layered mint Oreos, and sprinkled it with crushed Oreos too.

That’s it! You have a beautiful cake!

  1. Came recipe is so flawed. Ingredients have mint extract and crushed mint oreo cookies but doesn’t say when to add them to the cake??
