Homemade French Onion Dip Recipe
This French Onion Dip From Scratch Recipe skips the French onion soup packet and is instead made with fresh caramelized onions, cream cheese, and sour cream.
- Yellow Onion
- 4 pieces of Bacon
- 8 oz Cream Cheese
- Lemon Zest from 1 Lemon
- Salt & Pepper
- Sour Cream
Onions are a super star veggie. They contain fiber and folic acid, a B vitamin that helps the body make healthy new cells. Onions are healthy raw and cooked. Although, raw onions have higher levels of organic sulfur compounds that provide many benefits.
How to make French Onion Dip?
Start by taking the cream cheese out of the fridge and letting it get soft on the counter.
Then, cook bacon so that it’s crispy, but not burnt.
Dice the yellow onion up into small pieces.
In the skillet, cook an onion in oil just enough to make the pan non-stick.
Cook onions until golden brown and almost burnt.
In a bowl, add the cream cheese once it is soft.
Then, wash and zest a lemon over the mixing bowl.
Break up the bacon into tiny pieces and add to the bowl.
Once the onions are done cooking add the onions to the mixing bowl.
Add the 1 cup of sour cream.
Mix everything together until the onions, bacon, and lemon are evenly distributed.
Finally, put the onion dip covered into the fridge for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Recipe Tips & Swaps
You can mix the onion with garlic by adding 1/4 tsp of garlic powder to the dip. It add a hint of garlic without being overpowering.
If you do not have a fresh lemon on hand, you can use food grade lemon essential oil instead. I have add lemon essential oil to dips and salad before and it is an awesome flavor packed choice. For this recipe, I would only add 4 drops of the lemon essential oil.

If you have an aversion to dairy, make sure that there is no hidden dairy ingredients. I’ve made that mistake before with an Almond shredded cheese. I assumed almond shredded cheese did not have dairy, but my vegan friend let me know that I was wrong!
