When I was a kid my mom would make me Lipton onion soup mix with the powder. It was probably my favorite food. This Homemade French Onion Dip is made from scratch and reminds me of what I remember the Lipton onion dip tastes like. It’s very nostalgic.

However, in my memory, this Caramelized Onion Dip Recipe has the flavor I remember. It brings me back to childhood with every bite. How to make French Onion Dip?

Start by taking the cream cheese out of the fridge and letting it get soft on the counter.

Then, cook bacon so that it’s crispy, but not burnt.

Dice the yellow onion up into small pieces.

Put a skillet on medium heat.

In the skillet, cook an onion in oil just enough to make the pan non-stick.

Cook onions until golden brown and almost burnt.

In a bowl, add the cream cheese once it is soft.

Then, wash and zest a lemon over the mixing bowl.

Break up the bacon into tiny pieces and add to the bowl.

Once the onions are done cooking add the onions to the mixing bowl.

Add the 1 cup of sour cream.

Mix everything together until the onions, bacon, and lemon are evenly distributed.

Finally, put the onion dip covered into the fridge for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Recipe Tips & Swaps

You can mix the onion with garlic by adding 1/4 tsp of garlic powder to the dip. It add a hint of garlic without being overpowering.

If you do not have a fresh lemon on hand, you can use food grade lemon essential oil instead. I have add lemon essential oil to dips and salad before and it is an awesome flavor packed choice. For this recipe, I would only add 4 drops of the lemon essential oil.

Tips & Tricks for Making the Recipe Dairy Free

You can make this Easy French Onion Dip Recipe dairy free by using dairy free cream cheese and dairy free sour cream. I have found then at a ton of local grocery stores like Aldi, Whole Foods, and Publix.

If you have an aversion to dairy, make sure that there is no hidden dairy ingredients. I’ve made that mistake before with an Almond shredded cheese. I assumed almond shredded cheese did not have dairy, but my vegan friend let me know that I was wrong!
